Anita Hochman

Anita's approach to painting is essentially expressive and intuitive as she distils aspects of the landscape through which to express an experience, an emotion. Through the genre of 'landscape' she explores imagination, memory and transience.

Having lived in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales for many years, Hochman's paintings are infused with visions of that region. Drawn to landscapes in flux, often sky and waterscapes, she creates works that have a sweeping sense of space yet that space may be ambiguous and references to form may shift like mirages or figments of the imagination.

Light is the primary element in these paintings. Hochman's process involves stripping back the paintings to their essentials while building them, layer upon layer, simultaneously destroying and creating.  Working with the simplest of tools, a broad brush and very fluid paint and media, she implies space and structure through shape, colour and line.

Anita holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of New South Wales. She has held 15 solo exhibitions and been represented in over 100 selected and curated group exhibitions. She lectured in Painting at Southern Cross University in Lismore for 17 years.  She has been artist in residence at The Gunnery Studios, Sydney, at Bundanon on the Shoalhaven River, and at the Centre d’Art Marnay on the river Seine in France. She has won awards in Australia and overseas, including the Australia Council for the Arts New Work Grant and her work is held in private and public collections in Australia, Ireland, the USA and Canada.
